| It is a pleasure to be writing this and imagining each and every one of you who will be reading this mission statement. I hope this finds you well. With great pride and joy, I will be hosting, as a satellite of the 9th Federation of the Asian and Oceanian Physiological Societies Congress (FAOPS2019), FAOPS2019 & ADInstruments Teaching Workshop on March 27 (Wed) and 28 (Thr) 2019 at the Kobe International Conference Center. The Physiological Society of Japan defines physiology as ‘Lively Learning of the Logic of Life’. It is the academic field that researches, studies and pursues the understanding of the mechanism of life at all levels from molecules, cells, and organs, to the whole body. A living organism in its physiological state, is functioning normally and is healthy. Without the understanding of that, it would be impossible to understand its pathological state, in which the organism is functioning abnormally and is sick. Thus, physiology is the research area that is the basis for all clinical medicine involving the understanding of diseases and the development of their treatment. The importance is globally and clearly recognized by the ‘Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine’. A wide understanding of such a fundamental academic area among researchers of the next generation, clinicians and the general public, leads not only to intellectual wealth, but also to the extension of a healthy life span, enhancement of productivity and social wealth today as well as in the future. We, the physiology educators, are striving day and night, towards such determination and mission. Furthermore, nothing is more meaningful and constructive for this area than to share our materials, know-how and teaching research results with colleagues who share the same goals. The widely developed of communication technology of the present, makes it even more meaningful to get together under one roof. The Federation of the Asian and Oceanian Physiological Societies (FAOPS), which aims toward further development of physiology and exchange in Asia and Oceania, was founded 30 years ago, as conceived by Dr. Masao Ito, Emeritus Professor of Tokyo University (first president of FAOPS). It now has 14 regular member societies and 6 associate member societies. Many Japanese researchers have served as council members and officer, and thus have contributed to the management of the federation, contributing to the development of physiology in each society. Ever since the first Congress in Thailand in 1990, a congress has been held every 4 years, by a regular member society. The academic theme of the workshop is set to be “Blossoming the Future of Active Learners”. Please note the cover of this mission statement, where you will find the official logo symbolizing the cherry blossoms, which will be blossoming around the time of the workshop, and the Kobe Port. It is impossible to find a profession, for which a graduate (may they be of high education) can expect to maintain for a lifetime based only on the knowledge gained by the time of graduation. The worker is expected to be a life-long learner who, at each and every confronting situation, can extract the core issue, search, learn and introduce the solution. In order to turn out such capable personnel, the actual sites of education are expected to shift away from the classic strategy of cramming one-way lectures and passive memorization-emphasized education towards ‘active learning’ in which asking questions and solving problems are the main activities. It is the social responsibility and mission for physiology educators and this workshop to yield active physiology learners, so that their own future and that of the region they work in, blossoms to its full potential. Both the international and local committees have been established, and are organizing the preparation of the workshop. The program has been tentatively scheduled. All of us aim to host a workshop that is attractive for the participants from all physiological societies in Asia and Oceania, where physiology education will be increasing in importance, keeping in mind the regional cultures that may influence education, and searching for a way to create contents that can be announced and utilized globally. We here cordially and humbly ask for your understanding of the mission and support for this workshop. |
